ARTIST PRACTICE: A small 7” x 10” watercolor and pencil study of an orchid that hangs in the gardens that surround Waipio Wayside on the Big Island of Hawaii, one of my favorite places on earth. I was most interested in the knotted rope-like twists the orchid roots grew as it over runs its basket. It hangs from a lemon tree, so a few lemons made it into the study, too. The challenge was to make sense out of so much chaotic detail. With any view we see, it can be a struggle to figure out what to keep and what to leave out. (Thank god for artistic license). BELOW: The photo used as reference — all that detail! I could have pulled back and included more of the scenery but as I mentioned, I was really interested in the knotted rope like orchid roots and their detail. It’s something I often do – focus on “the stuff” others might not want to.
